Mortality data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are based on information from death certificates filed in the fifty states and the District of Columbia. Other locations are not included.
For privacy reasons, the CDC does not provide sub-national data for areas with fewer than 10 deaths. Additionally, areas with fewer than 20 deaths are not shown on the map. The crude rate, which is number of deaths divided by unit of population, is deemed unreliable for these counties. Areas for which data is suppressed or the crude rate is unreliable are filled with grid lines instead of a solid color.
