The squares are proportional to the population of the states. Each square is divided by vertical lines into five rectangles, each representing a race population. Each rectangle is divided into three sections. The top represents those born in the state, the middle represents those born out of the state, and the bottom represents those born out of the United States.

These figures require care in a few cases where the number of inhabitants is so small as to reduce the enclosed rectangle to a width scarcely perceptible to the eye.
