This series of charts shows changes in income source, debt, and spending from 1948 through 2014.

Debt increased.

Receipts from social insurance and retirement increased, whereas receipts from excise taxes decreased.

Spending on defense decreased, whereas spending for social security, Medicare, and individuals increased.
